Zentel (Albendazole Tablets) is used in the treatment of single or mixed infestations of intestinal and tissue parasites (parasitic worm infestations), in adults and children over 2 years of age. This medication is used to treat Neurocysticercosis, an infection caused by larval forms of the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium. It is also used for the treatment of cystic hydatid disease of the liver, lung, and peritoneum, caused by the larval form of the dog tapeworm, Echinococcus granulosus.
Zentel tablets, an effective deworming medicine is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Limited in the strengths of 400 mg.
Bandy tablets, is another deworming medicine containing the same active ingredient as Zentel tablets and is manufactured by Mankind Pharma Limited, India in the strengths of 400 mg.

Uses of Zentel (Albendazole Tablets)
Zentel (Albendazole Tablets), broad-spectrum antihelminthic agent is used to treat a variety of parasitic worm infestations and is an effective worm treatment for humans. It is useful for treatment of giardiasis, trichuriasis, filariasis, neurocysticercosis, hydatid disease, pinworm disease, and ascariasis, among others. Bandy Tablets also contain 400 mg of Albendazole and are used to treat the same indications as listed above.
Zentel Dosage
The dosage of Zentel (Albendazole Tablets) for various indications is given below: Hydatid Disease:
Patients with a weight of 60 kg or greater have to be administered a dosage of 400 mg twice daily, with meals
Patients with a weight of less than 60 kg have to be administered a dosage of 15 mg/kg/day given in divided doses twice daily with meals (maximum total daily dose 800 mg)
The duration of treatment is 28-day cycle followed by a 14-day albendazole-free interval, for a total of 3 cycles
Neurocysticercosis:
Patients with a weight of 60 kg or greater have to be administered a dosage of 400 mg twice daily, with meals for a period of 8 to 30 days Patients with a weight of less than 60 kg have to be administered a dosage of 15 mg/kg/day given in divided doses twice daily with meals (maximum total daily dose 800 mg) for a period of 8 to 30 days
Zentel Storage
Store Zentel tablets at controlled room temperature (68°F to 77°F, 20°C to 25°C). Protect from light.
Contraindications
Zentel tablets are contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Albendazole, other benzimidazole derivatives (such as Mebendazole), or any inactive ingredient present in tablets.
Zentel (Albendazole Tablets) are contraindicated during pregnancy or in women thought to be pregnant. Women of childbearing age must be advised to take effective precautions against conception during and within one month of completion of treatment with Zentel.
Warnings and Precautions
Before taking Albendazole tablets (Zentel), tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to this medication or to any other Benzimidazole anthelmintic drugs (such as Mebendazole); or if you have any other allergies.
You must also inform your doctor regarding your medical history, especially of: liver disease, biliary tract problems (such as blockage), blood/bone marrow disorders. There is a possibility that this medicine may cause liver problems. Due to the fact that drinking alcohol increases the risk of liver problems, patients are advised to limit alcoholic beverages while using this medication.
Zentel (Albendazole Tablets) Side Effects
The Albendazole side effects occurring with a frequency of 1% or more are Abnormal Liver Function Tests, Abdominal Pain, Nausea/Vomiting, Headache, Dizziness/Vertigo, Raised Intracranial Pressure, Meningeal Signs, Reversible Alopecia and Fever. These symptoms were normally mild and resolved without treatment.
The following Zentel side effects were observed at an incidence of less than 1%:
Blood and Lymphatic System Disorders: Leukopenia. There have been rare reports of granulocytopenia, pancytopenia, agranulocytosis, or thrombocytopenia. Patients with liver disease, including hepatic echinococcosis, appear to be more at risk of bone marrow suppression.
Immune System Disorders: Hypersensitivity reactions, including rash and urticaria.
Postmarketing Adverse Reactions: In addition to adverse events reported from clinical trials, the following events have been identified during world-wide post-approval use of ALBENZA. Because they are reported voluntarily from a population of unknown size, estimates of frequency cannot be made. These events have been chosen for inclusion due to a combination of their seriousness, frequency of reporting, or potential causal connection to ALBENZA.
Blood and Lymphatic System Disorders: Aplastic anemia, bone marrow suppression, neutropenia.
Hepatobiliary Disorders: Elevations of hepatic enzymes, hepatitis, acute liver failure.
Skin and Subcutaneous Tissue Disorders: Erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
Renal and Urinary Disorders: Acute renal failure.
Overdosage
During clinical studies with animals, symptoms were demonstrated in a dose-response relationship and included diarrhea, vomiting, tachycardia, and respiratory distress.
One overdosage has been reported with Albendazole tablets in a patient who took at least 16 grams over 12 hours. No untoward effects were reported.
In case of Zentel overdosage, symptomatic therapy and general supportive measures are recommended.
Albendazole During Pregnancy
Albendazole has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category C. Albendazole has been shown to be teratogenic (to cause embryotoxicity and skeletal malformations) in pregnant rats and rabbits. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of albendazole administration in pregnant women.
Albendazole should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Do not use Zentel (Albendazole Tablets) without your doctor's consent in case you are pregnant. Stop using this medication and inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant during treatment.
Nursing Considerations
Albendazole is known to be excreted in animal milk. It is not known whether it is excreted in human milk. Since many drugs are excreted in human milk, caution should be exercised when albendazole is administered to a nursing woman.
Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
