Generic Famciclovir Tablets (Virovir by FDC Ltd.) are used for the treatment of herpes zoster (shingles), acute treatment of first episode and recurrences of genital herpes infections, and for the suppression of recurrent genital herpes. Generic Famciclovir is also used to treat recurrent herpes labialis (cold sores). Virovir Tablets are also used to treat immunocompromised patients with herpes zoster or herpes simplex infections.

Active Ingredient present in Virovir Tablets
The active ingredient present in Virovir tablets is Famciclovir. Each film-coated Virovir tablet contains 250 mg or 500 mg of Famciclovir.
Uses of Generic Famciclovir (Virovir by FDC Ltd.)
This antiviral medicine is used to treat outbreaks of cold sores (fever blisters) and shingles (herpes zoster) as well as to decrease the number of outbreaks of genital herpes in healthy adults. It is also used to treat outbreaks of herpes simplex lesions in or around the mouth, genitals, and anal area in people infected with HIV.
Generic Famciclovir (Virovir Tablets) - Dosage
Herpes Zoster Infections In Immunocompetent Adults
The recommended dosage of Virovir is 250 mg three times a day or 500 mg twice a day or 750 mg once a day for seven days for the treatment of the acute phase of herpes zoster.
500 mg three times a day for seven days for the treatment of ophthalmic zoster.
Treatment with Generic Famciclovir yields better results if started as soon as possible after rash onset. For those patients at risk of Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN), 250 to 500 mg of Famciclovir tablets taken three times a day for seven days, taken during the acute phase of the disease, to decrease the duration and incidence of PHN.
Herpes Zoster Infections In Immunocompromised Adults
The recommended dosage is 500 mg three times daily for ten days. Initiation of treatment has to start preferably as soon as possible after rash onset.
Herpes Simplex Infections In Immunocompetent Adults
First episode of genital herpes
The dosage is 250 mg three times daily for five days. The treatment has to be started as soon as possible after onset of lesions.
Recurrent genital herpes
The dosage is 1000 mg twice daily for one day or 125 mg twice daily for five days. The recommended initiation of treatment is during the prodromal period or as soon as possible after onset of lesions.
Recurrent Herpes Labialis (Cold Sores)
The dosage is 1500 mg as a single dose for one day. Starting of treatment is recommended at the earliest sign or symptom of a cold sore (e.g. tingling, itching or burning)
Herpes Simplex Infections In Immunocompromised Adults
The recommended dose is 500 mg twice daily for seven days. Initiation of treatment is recommended as soon as possible after rash onset.
Suppression Of Recurrent Genital Herpes Infections
The recommended dose is 250 mg twice daily. The length of treatment with Generic Famciclovir depends on the severity of the disease.
Therapy has to be re-evaluated after 12 months in order to observe possible changes in the natural history of the disease. A dose of 500 mg twice a day has been shown to be effective in HIV patients.
How to Use Famciclovir tablets (Generic Famciclovir)
Take Virovir exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. The recommended dosage of Famciclovir tablets and how often you should take it varies according to your condition and the indication being treated. Generic Famciclovir can be taken with or without food.
It is important for you to finish all of the medicine as prescribed, even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may continue even after you have finish your entire dose. Famciclovir Tablets (Virovir)- Contraindications
Famciclovir tablets are contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to Famciclovir the active ingredient, or any inactive component present in Virovir tablets or penciclovir cream.
Famciclovir Side effects
The most common side effects reported in patients treated with Famciclovir tablets include Headache, Dizziness, Vomiting, Nausea, Abnormal liver function tests, Rash, pruritus.
Uncommon side effects include Confusion (predominantly in the elderly), Somnolence (predominantly in the elderly), Angioedema (e.g. face edema, eyelid edema, periorbital edema, pharyngeal edema) and urticaria.
Rare side effects of Virovir include Thrombocytopenia, Hallucinations and Cholestatic jaundice.
Cases of serious skin reactions such as erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis have been reported from post-marketing experience with Generic Famciclovir tablets (Famciclovir) via spontaneous case reports.

Warnings & Precautions When Using Virovir tablets (Generic Famciclovir)
Do not take Virovir tablets if you are allergic to Famciclovir (the active ingredient) or to Denavir® (penciclovir cream).
Before you start taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you:
• have kidney or liver problems
• have a rare genetic problem with galactose intolerance, a severe lactase deficiency or you do not absorb glucose-galactose (malabsorption)
• take any other medicines and products you use to treat herpes outbreaks
• have probenecid (Probalan)
Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of them with you to show to your healthcare provider every time you get a new medicine.
Famciclovir and Pregnancy
Famciclovir is classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category B. This medicine may be harmful to an unborn baby. There are no sufficient and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Famciclovir tablets should be used during pregnancy only if the benefit to the patient clearly exceeds the potential risk to the foetus.
It is not known whether Famciclovir passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby.There is no data on the safety of Famciclovir in breastfed infants. Virovir 250 mg tablets should not be used in nursing mothers unless the potential benefits are considered to outweigh the potential risks associated with treatment. Do not use this medicine without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
