Restasis 0.05% Eye Drops is used to treat patients whose tear production is presumed to be suppressed due to ocular inflammation associated with keratoconjunctivitis sicca. It works by decreasing swelling in the eye to allow for tear production.

The active ingredient present in Restasis eye drops is Cyclosporine.
Uses of Restasis Eye Drops (Cyclosporine Ophthalmic Solution)
Restasis 0.05% eye drops contain cyclosporine which increases tear production that has been reduced by inflammation in the eye(s). Cyclosporine is an immunosuppressive agent when administered systemically. Ophthalmic Solution is a topical immunomodulator which is used to increase tear production in patients whose tear production is presumed to be suppressed due to ocular inflammation associated with keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Cyclosporine Ophthalmic Solution is thought to act as a partial immunomodulator. The exact mechanism of action is not known.
Restasis Eye Drops (Cyclosporine) Dosage
The normal adult dose of Restasis Eye Drops (Cyclosporine) for the treatment of Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca:
1 drop 2 times a day in each eye approximately 12 hours apart.
Restasis eye drops are to be used only in the eye(s). Do not swallow or apply eye drops to the skin.
Missed Dose Instructions for Restasis Eye drops
Administer the missed dose of Restasis eye drops as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not administer a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Restasis Eye Drops Storage
Store Restasis Eye Drops (Cyclosporine Ophthalmic Solution) at controlled room temperature (15°C to 25°C). Protect from light.
Restasis Ophthalmic Solution Warnings
Inorder to avoid the potential for eye injury and contamination of the drops, be careful not to touch the vial tip to your eye or other surfaces.
Restasis ophthalmic Ophthalmic Solution should not be administered while wearing contact lenses. It is recommended that patients with decreased tear production should not wear contact lenses. In case contact lenses are worn, they should be removed prior to the administration of the emulsion. Contact lenses may be reinserted after at least 15 minutes have elapsed following administration of cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion.
Restasis Eye Drops Side Effects
The common Restasis Eye Drops side effect following the administration of eye drops was ocular burning (17%).
Other events reported in 1% to 5% of patients undergoing treatment with Restasis Eye Drops included conjunctival hyperaemia, discharge, epiphora, eye pain, foreign body sensation, pruritus, stinging and visual disturbance (most often blurring). Inform your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
- burning, itching, stinging, redness, or pain of the eyes
- overflow of tears
- red eyes
- eye discharge
- blurred vision or other vision changes
- feeling that something is in the eye
Restasis Eye Drops (Cyclosporine Ophthalmic Emulsion) Overdosage
An overdose of Restasis Eye Drops is not expected to be dangerous.
Cyclosporine Eye Drops may be harmful if swallowed. If swallowing or overdose is suspected, please contact a poison control center or emergency room right away.
Restasis Eye Drops Contraindications
Restasis Eye Drops are contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Cyclosporine or any inactive ingredient present in Restasis Eye Drops.
Restasis Ophthalmic Solution is also contraindicated in patients with an eye infection.
Restasis is not approved for use by anyone younger than 16 years old.
Cyclosporine Eye Drops During Pregnancy
Cyclosporine Eye Drops have been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category C. Do not use Restasis eye drops without your doctor's consent in case you are pregnant.
Adverse effects were seen in reproduction studies in animals only at toxic levels of oral doses. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of Cyclosporine Ophthalmic Solution in pregnant women. Restasis Eye Drops should be administered to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed.
Stop using this medication and inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant during treatment.
Nursing Considerations
Cyclosporine is known to be excreted in human milk following systemic administration but excretion in human milk after topical treatment has not been studied. Although blood concentrations are undetectable after topical administration of Cyclosporine ophthalmic solution, caution should be exercised when Restasis Eye Drops are administered to a nursing woman.
Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
