Uses of Premarin Vaginal Cream (Conjugated Estrogens)

Premarin Vaginal Cream (Conjugated Estrogens) Vaginal Cream therapy is used in the treatment of atrophic vaginitis and kraurosis vulvae. It is used by women to help reduce vaginal symptoms of menopause (such as vaginal dryness,burning, itching and painful intercourse). These symptoms are caused by the body making less estrogen and Premarin Vaginal Cream can relieve the sysmptoms by replacing the Estrogen that your body no longer produces.

Premarin Vaginal Cream (Conjugated Estrogens) Dosage

The recommended dosage of Premarin Vaginal Cream (Conjugated Estrogens) to treat moderate to severe painful intercourse, a symptom of vulvar and vaginal atrophy (VVA) due to menopause, is given below

Cyclic administration of 0.5 g to 2 g intravaginally daily for 21 days then off for 7 days for treatment of Atrophic Vaginitis and Kraurosis Vulvae
Cyclic administration of 0.5 g intravaginally daily for 21 days then off for 7 days for treatment of Moderate to Severe Dyspareunia, a Symptom of Vulvar and Vaginal Atrophy, due to Menopause
Twice-weekly administration of 0.5 g intravaginally (for example, Monday and Thursday) for treatment of Moderate to Severe Dyspareunia, a Symptom of Vulvar and Vaginal Atrophy, due to Menopause

Premarin Vaginal Cream Storage

Store Premarin Vaginal Cream at controlled room temperature (68°F to 77°F, 20°C to 25°C). Excursions are permitted to 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F) Protect from light.

Premarin Vaginal Cream Contraindications

Premarin Vaginal Cream is contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Conjugated Estrogens or any inactive ingredient present in Premarin Vaginal Cream. Premarin Vaginal Cream ia also contraindicated in the following cases:

• Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding
• Known, suspected, or history of breast cancer
• Known or suspected estrogen-dependent neoplasia
• Active Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), Pulmonary Embolism (PE), or a history of these conditions
• Active arterial thromboembolic disease (for example, stroke and MI), or a history of these conditions
• Known anaphylactic reaction or angioedema to Premarin Vaginal Cream
• Known liver dysfunction or disease
• Known protein C, protein S, or antithrombin deficiency or other known thrombophilic disorders
• Known or suspected pregnancy

Warnings and Precautions

The warnings and precautions to be taken while undergoing therapy with Premarin Vaginal Cream are given below:

Discontinue Estrogen if severe hypercalcemia, loss of vision, severe hypertriglyceridemia or cholestatic jaundice occurs
Monitor thyroid function in women on thyroid replacement therapy
An increased risk of stroke and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) has been reported with estrogen alone therapy.
An increased risk of Endometrial cancer has been reported with the use of unopposed estrogen therapy in women with a uterus. The reported endometrial cancer risk among unopposed estrogen users is about 2 to 12 times greater than in non-users, and appears dependent on duration of treatment and on estrogen dose. Most studies show no significant increased risk associated with use of estrogens for less than 1 year.
The relative risk of probable dementia for Conjugated Estrogens (CE 0.625 mg) alone versus placebo was 1.49.

Premarin Vaginal Cream Side Effects

There however appears to be little or no increased risk of birth defects in children born to women who have used estrogens and progestins as an oral contraceptive inadvertently during early pregnancy.

Premarin Vaginal Cream Nursing Considerations

Premarin Vaginal Cream must not be used during lactation. Estrogen administration to nursing women has been shown to decrease the quantity and quality of the breast milk. Detectable amounts of Estrogens have been found in the breast milk of women receiving Estrogen therapy. Caution must be exercised when Premarin Vaginal Cream is administered to a nursing woman.
