Uses of Lonitab Tablets

Lonitab (Minoxidil Tablets) are used to stimulate hair growth in early and moderate stages of hereditary hair loss (alopecia androgenetica). Lonitab tablets are used in the treatment of hypertension that is symptomatic or associated with target organ damage and is not manageable with maximum therapeutic doses of a diuretic plus two other antihypertensive drugs.

How does Lonitab (Minoxidil Tablets) Work?

Lonitab 5 mg and 10 mg tablets works by relaxing blood vessels of the body so that blood passes through them more easily. This helps to lower resistance to blood flow and thus lower blood pressure.

Lonitab 5 mg tablet stimulates hair growth in early and moderate stages of hereditary hair loss (alopecia androgenetica) by increasing the diameter of the hair shaft, stimulation and prolongation of growing phase of hair follicle (anagen). Being a peripheral vasodilator, Lonitab 5 mg tablet enhances microcirculation to hair follicles thereby stimulating the growth.

Minoxidil Tablets - Dosage

Usual Adult Dosage for hair Loss:
The normal dosage of Minoxidil tablets to stimulate the hair growth is 5 mg once a day.

Usual Adult Dose for Hypertension:
Initial dose: 5 mg orally once a day.
Maintenance dose: 10 mg to 40 mg in 1-2 divided doses.

Lonitab Tablets Contraindications

Lonitab tablets are contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Minoxidil or any inactive ingredient present in Lonitab tablets. This medicine is also contraindicated in cases of pheochromocytoma, because it may stimulate secretion of catecholamines from the tumor through its antihypertensive action.

Warnings and Precautions

Lonitab tablets contain the powerful antihypertensive agent, Minoxidil, which can produce serious side effects. It can cause pericardial effusion, occasionally progressing to tamponade, and angina pectoris may be exacerbated.

Congestive Heart Failure:
Concomitant use of an adequate diuretic is normally required. Minoxidil tablets must usually be administered along with a diuretic adequate to prevent fluid retention and possible congestive heart failure; a high ceiling (loop) diuretic is almost always required.

Concomitant Treatment to Prevent Tachycardia is Usually Required:
Minoxidil increases the heart rate. Angina may worsen or appear for the first time during treatment with Minoxidil tablets, probably because of the increased oxygen demands associated with increased heart rate and cardiac output.

Pericarditis, Pericardial Effusion and Tamponade:
There have been reports of pericarditis occurring in association with the use of Minoxidil (Lonitab tablets). The relationship of this association to renal status is uncertain.

Interaction with Guanethidine:
Although Minoxidil does not itself cause orthostatic hypotension, its administration to patients already receiving guanethidine can cause intense orthostatic effects.

Hazard of Rapid Control of Blood Pressure:
In patients with very severe high blood pressure, too rapid control of blood pressure, especially with intravenous agents, can precipitate syncope, cerebrovascular accidents, myocardial infarction and ischemia of special sense organs with resulting decrease or loss of vision or hearing.

Store Lonitab (Minoxidil Tablets) at controlled room temperature (68°F to 77°F, 20°C to 25°C). Protect from light. Dispense in tight, light-resistant container.

Minoxidil Tablets Side Effects

The following side effects have been reported in patients with high blood pressure being treated with Lonitab (Minoxidil Tablets):

Contact your doctor immediately in case any of the following side effects occur.

• You may feel faint or dizzy, especially when you stand up.
• Your body could hold on to more water than normal: you may notice that your ankles get puffy, or your rings get tight, or you could put on weight.
• You may find that you get more wheezy, breathless and tired, especially if you already have a weak heart.
• You may notice angina (usually chest pains) for the first time, or if you have angina already it could get worse.

Other side effects Lonitab (Minoxidil Tablets) may cause are:

• Increased heart rate, inflammation of the lining that surrounds the heart and abnormal electrocardiogram (ECG).
• Accumulation of fluid around the heart, compression of the heart due to a build up of fluid, fluid retention
• Decrease in white blood cells, reduction in blood platelets, which increases risk of bleeding or bruising, serious illness with blistering of the skin, mouth, eyes and genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), inflammation and blistering of the skin, rash.
• Accumulation of fluid between the layers of tissue that line the lungs and chest cavity, chest pains (angina), gastrointestinal disorders, swelling of the ankles, feet or fingers associated with or independent of weight gain, breast tenderness, reduced kidney function resulting in increased creatinine and urea levels in your blood

Minoxidil Overdosage

There have been only a few cases of deliberate or accidental overdosage with Minoxidil tablets. One patient recovered after taking 50 mg of Minoxidil together with 500 mg of a barbiturate.

Intravenous administration of normal saline will help to maintain blood pressure and facilitate urine formation in such patients. Sympathomimetic drugs such as norepinephrine or epinephrine must be avoided because of their excessive cardiac stimulating action.

Phenylephrine, angiotensin II, vasopressin, and dopamine all reverse hypotension due to Minoxidil, but must only be used if underperfusion of a vital organ is evident.

Minoxidil During Pregnancy

Minoxidil has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category C. Do not use Lonitab 5 mg tablets without your doctor's consent in case you are pregnant. Stop using this medication and inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant during treatment.

Oral administration of Minoxidil has been associated with evidence of increased fetal resorption in rabbits, but not rats, when administered at five times the maximum recommended oral antihypertensive human dose. There was no evidence of teratogenic effects in rats as well as rabbits.

There are no adequate and well controlled studies conducted in pregnant women. Lonitab tablets should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

Nursing Considerations

There has been one report of Minoxidil excretion in the breast milk of a woman treated with 5 mg oral Minoxidil twice daily for hypertension. Due to the possibility for adverse effects in nursing infants from Minoxidil absorption, Minoxidil must not be administered to a nursing woman.
Do not use this medicine without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
