The active ingredient present in Metolar XR capsules is Metoprolol Succinate. Each extended-release Metolar XR capsule contains Metoprolol Succinate equivalent to 25 mg, 50 mg or 100 mg of Metoprolol Tartrate.

Uses Of Generic Toprol XL (Metolar XR Capsules by Cipla)

Generic Toprol XL is used to treat angina (chest pain) and hypertension (high blood pressure). Metolar XR Capsules are also used to treat or prevent heart attack. The medicine belongs to a group of drugs called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers affect the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins).
The active ingredient used in Generic Toprol XL is Metoprolol Succinate (where 100 mg Metoprolol Tartrate corresponds to 95 mg Metoprolol Succinate). The Tartrate is an immediate-release and the Succinate is an extended-release formulation.
Metoprolol is used in the treatment of a number of conditions that include hypertension, to lower blood pressure. It may be administered with other antihypertensive agents.

Metoprolol Capsules (Generic Toprol XL) - Dosage

The dose of Metoprolol Capsules (Generic Toprol XL) has to be administered once daily. Dosing of Generic Toprol XL has to be individualized. Please consult your doctor for exact dosing instructions.
Heart Failure: Recommended starting dose is 12.5 mg or 25 mg doubled every two weeks to the highest dose tolerated or up to 200 mg.
Hypertension: Usual initial dosage is 25 to 100 mg once daily. The dosage may be increased at weekly (or longer) intervals until optimum blood pressure reduction is achieved
Angina Pectoris:The dosage has to be be individualized as per the patient being treated. The usual initial dosage of Metoprolol is 100 mg daily, given in a single dose. The dosage has to be gradually increased at weekly intervals until optimum clinical response has been obtained or there is a pronounced slowing of the heart rate.
Migraine Prophylaxis:The dosage is 100 mg to 200 mg once daily in the morning.

How to Use Metolar XR Capsules (Generic Toprol XL)

Take Metolar XR capsules exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Take this medicine at the same time every day.
This medicine should be taken with food or just after a meal. It can be divided in half if your doctor has told you to do so. The half tablet should be swallowed whole, without chewing or crushing. Chewing or crushing the tablet could cause too much of the drug to be released at one time.
Do not skip doses or stop taking this medicine without first talking to your doctor. Stopping suddenly may make your condition worse. Your blood pressure will need to be checked often. Visit your doctor regularly. If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using this medicine.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Get emergency medical help if you have any signs of an allergic reaction including: hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
• chest pain, pounding heartbeats or fluttering in your chest
• feeling light-headed, fainting
• feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion
• swelling of your hands or feet
• nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
• easy bruising, unusual bleeding (nose, mouth, vagina, or rectum), purple or red pinpoint spots under your skin
• wheezing, trouble breathing
• depression, confusion, memory problems, hallucinations
• cold feeling in your hands and feet

Less serious side effects of Metolar XR capsules may include:
• dry mouth, constipation, heartburn, vomiting, diarrhea
• decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm
• headache, drowsiness, tired feeling
• sleep problems (insomnia)
• anxiety, nervousness

Metoprolol Succinate Overdose

Overdosage of Metoprolol Succinate (Metolar XR capsules) may lead to severe bradycardia, hypotension and cardiogenic shock. Clinical presentation can also include: AV block, heart failure, bronchospasm, hypoxia, impairment of consciousness/coma, nausea and vomiting.

Generic Toprol XL (Metolar XR capsules) is containdicated in patients with Severe bradycardia, Second- or third-degree heart block, Cardiogenic shock, Decompensated cardiac failure, Sick sinus syndrome (unless a permanent pacemaker is in place). It is also contraindicated in patients with a Hypersensitivity to Metoprolol or any inactive component of Metolar XR capsules.
