The active ingredient present in Topirol Tablets is Topiramate. Each tablet of Topirol contains 25 mg, 50 mg or 100 mg of Topiramate.
Uses of Generic Topamax (Topirol Tablets by Sun Pharma)
Generic Topamax (Topirol tablets) is used to treat certain types of seizures including partial onset seizures and primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures as well as to prevent migraine headaches in adults. Topiramate tablets are used for the treatment of the following indications:
Monotherapy Epilepsy:
Initial monotherapy in patients 2 years of age or more with partial onset or primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures.
Adjunctive Therapy Epilepsy:
Adjunctive therapy for adult as well as pediatric patients (2 to 16 years of age) with partial onset seizures or primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and in patients 2 years of age or more with seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS).
Migraine:
Treatment for adults and adolescents 12 years of age and older for prophylaxis of migraine headaches.
Topiramate Tablets (Topirol) - Dosage
The dosage of Topiramate tablets (Topirol) for various indications is given below:
Epilepsy monotherapy: Children 2 years to less than 10 years
The starting dose is 25 mg/day administered nightly for the first week
Epilepsy monotherapy: Adults and Pediatric Patients 10 years and Above
The starting dose is 50 mg/day in two divided doses
Epilepsy Adjunctive Therapy:: Adults with Partial Onset Seizures or LGS
The starting dose is 25 mg to 50 mg/day. The dosage should be increased weekly to an effective dose by increments of 25 to 50 mg. The recommended dosage is 200 mg to 400 mg/day in two divided doses
Epilepsy Adjunctive Therapy: Adults with Primary Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizures
The starting dose is 25 to 50 mg/day. The dosage should be increased weekly to an effective dose by increments of 25 mg to 50 mg. The recommended dosage is 400 mg/day in two divided doses
Epilepsy adjunctive therapy: pediatric patients with partial onset seizures, primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures or LGS
The starting dose is 25 mg/day (or less, based on a range of 1 mg/kg/day to 3 mg/kg/day) nightly for the first week
The dosage should be increased at 1-week or 2-week intervals by increments of 1 mg/kg/day to 3 mg/kg/day (to be administered in two divided doses). The Dose titration should be guided by clinical outcome.
The recommended dosage is 5 mg/kg/day to 9 mg/kg/day in two divided doses
Migraine Treatment::
The starting dose is 25 mg/day administered nightly for the first week.
The dosage should be increased weekly by increments of 25 mg.

How to Use Generic Topamax Tablets (Topirol)
Take Generic Topamax tablets exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not change your dose without talking to your healthcare provider.
This tablet should be swallowed whole. Do not chew the tablets; they may leave a bitter taste. It can be taken before, during, or after a meal.
Do not store any medicine and food mixture for later use. Drink plenty of fluids during the day. This may help prevent kidney stones while taking this medicine.
If you take too much of this medicine, call your healthcare provider or poison control center right away or go to the nearest emergency room.
If you miss a single dose of this medicine, take it as soon as you can. However, if you are within 6 hours of taking your next scheduled dose, wait until then to take your usual dose of this medicine, and skip the missed dose. Do not double your dose. If you have missed more than one dose, you should call your healthcare professional for advice.
Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your healthcare provider. Stopping this medicine suddenly may cause serious problems. If you have epilepsy and you stop taking this medicine suddenly, you may have seizures that do not stop. Your healthcare provider will tell you how to stop taking it slowly. Your healthcare provider may do blood tests while you take this medicine.
Topiramate Side effects
The most common side effects of Topiramate Tablets (Topirol) include:
• tingling of the arms and legs (paresthesia)
• not feeling hungry
• nausea
• a change in the way foods taste
• diarrhea
• weight loss
• nervousness
• upper respiratory tract infection
Topiramate Tablets can cause serious Metabolic Acidosis. Side effects include:
• tiredness
• loss of appetite
• irregular heartbeat
• impaired consciousness
High ammonia in the blood can affect your mental activities, slow your alertness, make you feel tired, or cause vomiting. This has happened when this medicine is taken with a medicine called valproic acid (DEPAKENE and DEPAKOTE).
Drink plenty of fluids when taking this medicine to decrease your chances of getting kidney stones.
Topirol tablets may affect how you think, and cause confusion, problems with concentration, attention, memory, or speech. It may cause depression or mood problems, tiredness, and sleepiness.
Tell your healthcare provider about any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away. These are not all the possible side effects of this medicine.
Warnings & Precautions When Using Generic Topamax (Topirol Tablets)
Before taking Generic Topamax, tell your healthcare provider about all your medical conditions, including if you:
• have or has had depression, mood problems, or suicidal thoughts or behavior
• have kidney problems, have kidney stones, or are getting kidney dialysis
• have a history of metabolic acidosis (too much acid in the blood)
• have liver problems
• have osteoporosis, soft bones, or decreased bone density
• have lung or breathing problems
• have eye problems, especially glaucoma
• have diarrhea
• have a growth problem
• are on a diet high in fat and low in carbohydrates, which is called a ketogenic diet
• are having surgery
Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. This medicine and other medicines may affect each other causing side effects.
Especially, tell your healthcare provider if you take:
• Valproic acid (DEPAKENE, DEPAKOTE)
• any medicines that impair or decrease your thinking, concentration, or muscle coordination
• birth control pills
This medicine may make your birth control pills less effective. Tell your healthcare provider if your menstrual bleeding changes while you are taking birth control pills and this medicine. Ask your healthcare provider if you are not sure if your medicine is listed above.
Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of them to show your healthcare provider and pharmacist each time you get a new medicine. Do not start a new medicine without talking with your healthcare provider. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine. This medicine and alcohol can affect each other causing side effects such as sleepiness and dizziness. Do not drive a car or operate heavy machinery until you know how this medicine affects you, this medicine can slow your thinking and motor skills, and may affect vision.
Topiramate and Alcohol
Simultaneous administration of Topiramate and alcohol or other CNS depressant medicines has not been evaluated in clinical studies. It is recommended that Generic Topamax (Topirol Tablets) should not be used concomitantly with alcohol or other CNS depressant medicines.
Topiramate and Pregnancy
Topiramate has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category D. Topiramate may cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman. Data from pregnancy registries has indicated that infants exposed to topiramate in utero have a higher risk for cleft lip and /or cleft palate (oral clefts).
