Generic Plavix (Clopidogrel tablets) is a platelet inhibitor and prevents blood clots in coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, and cerebrovascular disease. Clopivas is used for the treatment of patients with Acute coronary syndrome (unstable angina (UA)/non-ST-segment elevation ACS (NSTEMI)& ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) ), recent myocardial infarction (MI), recent stroke, or established peripheral arterial disease. The active ingredient present in Generic Plavix (Clopivas tablets) is Clopidogrel Bisulfate. Clopivas tablets are manufactured by Cipla Ltd. in the strengths of 75 mg.

The active ingredient present in Clopivas tablets is Clopidogrel Bisulfate. Each film-coated Clopivas tablet contains 75 mg of Clopidogrel Bisulfate.

Uses of Generic Plavix (Clopivas by Cipla)

This medicine is used alone or with aspirin to lower your chance of getting serious problems with your heart or blood vessels such as heart attack, stroke, or blood clot that can lead to death. It is also used to treat chest pain due to heart problems and poor blood circulation in the legs (peripheral arterial disease). The medicine helps to prevent platelets from sticking together and forming a clot that can block an artery. Platelets are blood cells that help your blood clot normally.

Clopidogrel Mechanism of Action

Clopidogrel (Clopivas tablets by Cipla) is an inhibitor of platelet activation and aggregation through the irreversible binding of its active metabolite to the P2Y12 class of ADP receptors on platelets.

Clopidogrel Tablets(Clopivas) - Dosage

Clopidogrel tablets can be administered with or without food. The dosage for Generic Plavix (Clopivas) is as follows

Acute coronary syndrome
  - Non-ST-segment elevation ACS (UA/NSTEMI): 300 mg loading dose followed by 75 mg once daily, in combination with aspirin (75 to 325 mg once daily)
  - STEMI: 75 mg once daily, in combination with aspirin (75 to 325 mg once daily), with or without a loading dose and with or without thrombolytics
Recent MI, recent stroke, or established peripheral arterial disease:
75 mg once daily

How to Use Clopidogrel Tablets(Clopivas)

Take Clopidogrel tablets exactly as your doctor tells you. Do not change your dose or stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor first. Stopping Generic Plavix may increase your risk of heart attack or stroke.

Take this medicine with aspirin as instructed by your doctor. You can take this medicine with or without food. If you miss a dose, take this medicine as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Take the next dose at your regular time. Do not take 2 doses of this medicine at the same time unless your doctor tells you to.
If you take too much this medicine, call your doctor or go to the nearest emergency room right away. Talk with your doctor about stopping your this medicine before you have surgery. Your doctor may tell you to stop taking this medicine at least 5 days before you have surgery to avoid excessive bleeding during surgery.

It is not known if Generic Plavix is safe and effective in children.

This medicine may not work as well in people who:
• Has certain genetic factors that affect how the body breaks down this medicine. Your doctor may do genetic tests to make sure this medicine is right for you.
• Takes certain medicines, especially omeprazole (Prilosec®). Your doctor may change the medicine you take for stomach acid problems while you take this medicine.

Generic Plavix (Clopivas tablets) is contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Clopidogrel or any of the inactive ingredients present in Clopivas tablets. Clopivas is also contraindicated in patients with Severe liver impairment, Active pathological bleeding such as peptic ulcer and intracranial haemorrhage or if Breastfeeding.

Clopidogrel Side Effects

Clopidogrel tablets can cause serious side effects such as Bleeding and a blood clotting problem called Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP). TTP can happen with Clopidogrel (the active ingredient), sometimes after a short time (less than 2 weeks). TTP is a blood clotting problem where blood clots form in blood vessels - it can happen anywhere in the body. TTP needs to be treated in a hospital right away, because it may cause death.

Clopidogrel tablets can cause bleeding which can be serious and can sometimes lead to death. This medicine is a blood thinner medicine that lowers the chance of blood clots forming in your body. While you take this medicine:
• you may bruise and bleed more easily
• you are more likely to have nose bleeds
• it will take longer for any bleeding to stop

Get medical help right away if you have any of the following symptoms and they cannot be explained by another medical condition:
• purplish spots (called purpura) on the skin or in the mouth (mucous membranes) due to bleeding under the skin
• your skin or the whites of your eyes are yellow (jaundice)
• you feel tired or weak
• your skin looks very pale
• fever
• fast heart rate or feeling short of breath
• headache
• speech changes
• confusion
• coma
• stroke
• seizure
• low amount of urine, or urine that is pink or has blood in it
• stomach area (abdominal) pain
• nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
• vision changes

Tell your doctor if you have any other Generic Plavix side effects that bothers you or that does not go away. These are not all the possible side effects of Clopidogrel tablets (Clopivas). For more information, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Clopidogrel Tablets (Clopivas) - Overdosage

Platelet inhibition by Clopidogrel (Generic Plavix tablets) is irreversible and will last for the life of the platelet. Overdose following Clopidogrel administration may result in bleeding complications. Platelet transfusion may be able restore clotting ability.

Warnings & Precautions When Using Clopivas Tablets (Generic Plavix )

Do not take Clopivas tablets if you:
• currently have a condition that causes bleeding, such as a stomach ulcer
• are allergic to Clopidogrel or other ingredients in this medicine.

Before you take this medicine, tell your doctor if you:
• have a history of bowel (gastrointestinal) or stomach ulcers
• have a history of bleeding problems
• plan to have surgery or a dental procedure

It is not known if Generic Plavix tablets will harm your unborn baby. It is not known if this medicine passes into your breast milk.

Tell all of your dentist that you are taking this medicine. They should talk to the doctor who prescribed this medicine for you before you have any surgery or invasive procedure.
Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription, non-prescription medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements.

This medicine may affect the way other medicines work, and other medicines may affect how this medicine works.

Taking Generic Plavix tablets with certain other medicines may increase your risk of bleeding. Especially tell your doctor if you take:
• aspirin, especially if you have had a stroke. Always talk to your doctor about whether you should take aspirin along with Plavix to treat your condition.
• non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Ask your doctor or pharmacist for a list of NSAID medicines if you are not sure.
• warfarin (Coumadin®, Jantoven®)

Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of them to show your doctor or pharmacist when you get a new medicine.

Clopidogrel During Pregnancy

Clopidogrel has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category B. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies conducted with Clopidogrel tablets in pregnant women. Since animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of a human response, Clopivas tablets should be used during pregnancy only if clearly required.

Clopidogrel During Breastfeeding

Studies in rats have proved that Clopidogrel and/or its metabolites are excreted in the milk. It is not known at present whether Clopidogrel is excreted in human milk. Since many medicines are excreted in breastmilk and because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue Clopidogrel tablets, taking into account the importance of the medicine to the mother.
