The active ingredient present in Selgin tablets is Selegiline HCl. Each tablet of Selgin contains 5 mg of Selegiline HCl.
Uses of Selgin (Selegiline HCl Tablets)
Generic Eldepryl (Selgin 5 mg tablets) prevents the breakdown of a chemical in your brain called Dopamine. Low levels of Dopamine are associated with Parkinson's disease.
Selegiline HCl tablets (Selgin 5 mg by Intas Pharmaceuticals Ltd.) is used to help control the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
Selegiline Dosage
Start Selegiline treatment with 1.25 mg given once a day for at least 6 weeks; after 6 weeks, the dose may be escalated to 2.5 mg once a day. Place the tablet on top of the tongue where the tablet will disintegrate in a few seconds. Avoid food and liquid intake 5 minutes before and after each dose.
In patients with mild or moderate hepatic impairment, the dose should be reduced to 1.25 mg. Selgin tablets are not recommended in patients with severe hepatic impairment.

In pre-marketing studies, the following side effects caused, in decreasing order of frequency, to stopping of treatment with Selegiline: nausea, hallucinations, confusion, depression, loss of balance, insomnia, orthostatic hypotension, increased akinetic involuntary movements, agitation, arrhythmia, bradykinesia, chorea, delusions, hypertension, new or increased angina pectoris, and syncope.
Adverse effects reported only once as a cause of discontinuation are ankle edema, anxiety, burning lips/mouth, constipation, drowsiness/lethargy, dystonia, excess perspiration, increased freezing, gastrointestinal bleeding, hair loss, increased tremor, nervousness, weakness, and weight loss.
Selegiline Overdosage
Some patients exposed to doses of 600 mg of d,l-Selegiline suffered severe hypotension and psychomotor agitation.
Signs and symptoms of Selegiline overdosage can include, alone or in combination, any of the following symptoms: drowsiness, dizziness, faintness, irritability, hyperactivity, agitation, severe headache, hallucinations, trismus, opisthotonos, convulsions, and coma; rapid and irregular pulse, hypertension, hypotension and vascular collapse; precordial pain, respiratory depression and failure, hyperpyrexia, diaphoresis, and cool, clammy skin.
Treatment of Selegiline overdose with non-selective MAOIs is symptomatic and supportive. Induction of emesis or gastric lavage with instillation of charcoal slurry can be helpful in early poisoning, provided the airway has been protected against aspiration.
Signs and symptoms of central nervous system stimulation, including convulsions, should be treated with diazepam, given slowly intravenously. Phenothiazine derivatives as well as central nervous system stimulants must be avoided. Hypotension and vascular collapse must be treated with intravenous fluids and, if required, blood pressure titration with an intravenous infusion of a dilute pressor agent.

Selegiline has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category C.
No teratogenic effects were observed in a study of embryo-fetal development in rats at oral doses of 4, 12 and 35 times the human therapeutic dose on a mg/m2 basis. In the rat study, there was a decrease in fetal body weight at the highest dose tested. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies conducted in pregnant women. Selegiline should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
Do not use this medicine without your doctor's consent in case you are pregnant. Stop using this medication and inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant during treatment.
Nursing Considerations
It is not known whether Selegiline HCl is excreted in human milk. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk, consideration should be given to discontinuing the use of all but absolutely essential medicines in treating in nursing women.
Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
