The active ingredient present in Valzaar tablets is Valsartan. Each Valzaar tablet contains 40 mg, 80 mg or 160 mg of Valsartan.

Uses of Generic Diovan (Valzaar by Torrent)

This medicine is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) or heart failure. It is also used to reduce the risk of death after a heart attack. It belongs to a group of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists that keeps blood vessels from narrowing and thereby lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow.

Valsartan Tablets Dosage

Valsartan tablets (Generic Diovan) may be administered with or without food. The dosage of Valsartan tablets for the treatment of various indications is given below:

Treatment of Hypertension (Adults):
The initial dosage is 80 or 160 mg once daily. The dosage may be titrated to a range of 80 to 320 mg once daily as per the response of the individual patient.
Pediatric Hypertension (6­ to 16 years):
The initial dosage is 1.3 mg/kg once daily (up to 40 mg total). The dosage may be titrated to a range of 1.3 to 2.7 mg/kg once daily (up to 40 mg to 160 mg total) as per the response of the individual patient.
Treatment of Heart Failure :
The initial dosage is 40 mg twice daily once daily. The dosage may be titrated to a range of 40 to 160 mg twice daily as per the response of the individual patient. The maintenence dose is 160 mg twice daily.
Post-Myocardial Infarction:
The initial dosage is 20 mg twice daily . The dosage may be titrated to a range of 20-160 mg twice daily as per the response of the individual patient. The maintenence dose is 160 mg twice daily.

How to Use Generic Diovan (Valzaar Tablets)

Take Generic Diovan exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results from this medication.
You may take Valzaar tablets with or without food.
Your blood pressure will need to be checked on a regular basis to be sure this medicine is helping your condition. Do not miss any scheduled appointments.

It may take 2 to 4 weeks of using this medicine before your blood pressure is under control. For best results, keep using the medication as directed. Talk with your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 4 weeks of treatment.
Keep using this medication even if you feel fine. High blood pressure often has no symptoms.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Valzaar Tablets - Contraindications

Valzaar tablets (Generic Diovan) are contraindicated in the following cases:

• Known hypersensitivity to Valsartan or any inactive component present in Valzaar tablets.
• Do not coadminister Aliskiren with Generic Diovan in patients with diabetes.

Valsartan Side Effects

The most commonly occurring side effects in patients being treated with Valsartan tablets are headache, fatigue and dizziness.
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction:
• hives
• difficulty breathing
• swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

In rare cases, Valsartan tablets can cause a condition that result in the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, leading to kidney failure. Call your doctor right away if you have muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness especially if you also have fever, nausea or vomiting, and dark colored urine.

Call your doctor at once if you have any other serious side effects such as:
• feeling like you might pass out
• chest pain, fast or pounding heartbeats
• numbness or tingly feeling
• swelling and/ or weight gain

Less serious side effects of Generic Diovan (Valzaar Tablets) may include:
• runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, cough
• back pain
• diarrhea, constipation
• dry mouth, stomach pain, loss of appetite
• mild itching, skin rash
• sleep problems (insomnia)
• headache, dizziness, anxiety
• tired feeling
• weakness
• impotence, loss of interest in sex, or trouble having an orgasm

Overdose symptoms may include fast or slow heartbeat, dizziness, or feeling like you might pass out.

Valsartan Overdose

In case of overdose of Valsartan, the most likely symptoms will be hypotension and tachycardia; bradycardia could occur from parasympathetic (vagal) stimulation. Depressed level of consciousness, circulatory collapse and shock have also been reported in some patients. In case symptomatic hypotension occurs, supportive treatment should be instituted.

You should not use Valzaar tablets if you are allergic to valsartan. Before using Generic Diovan, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have:
• kidney disease
• liver disease
• congestive heart failure
• if you are dehydrated
If you have any of these conditions, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely take this medication.

Do not use potassium supplements or salt substitutes while you are taking this medicine, unless your doctor has told you to. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Get up slowly and steady yourself to prevent a fall.

Valsartan and Alcohol

It is not recommended to consume beverages that contain alcohol. Avoid drinking alcohol, since drinking alcohol can further lower your blood pressure and may increase certain side effects of Valsartan tablets (Generic Diovan).

Valsartan During Pregnancy

Valsartan has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category D. Use of medicines like Valsartan which act on the renin-angiotensin system during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy reduces fetal renal function and increases fetal and neonatal morbidity and death. Possible neonatal adverse effects include skull hypoplasia, anuria, hypotension, renal failure, and death. When pregnancy is detected during treatment, stop using Generic Diovan as soon as possible.
This medicine can cause harm to an unborn baby. This medicine may cause injury and even death to the unborn baby if you take it during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Do not use this medicine without your doctor's consent if you are pregnant.

Valsartan Nursing Implications

It is not known whether Valsartan (Generic Diovan ) is excreted in human milk. It was found during animal studies that Valsartan was excreted in the milk of lactating rats. However, animal breast milk drug levels may not correctly reflect human breast milk levels. Since many medicines are excreted into human milk and because of the potential for adverse reactions in nursing infants from Generic Diovan, a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or discontinue the medicine, taking into account the importance of the medication to the mother.Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
