Uses of Generic Boniva (Idrofos by Sun Pharma)
Ibandronate Sodium tablets (Idrofos) are used to treat or prevent osteoporosis in women after menopause. It alters the cycle of bone formation and breakdown in the body. Ibandronate Sodium is in the group of medicines called bisphosphonates.
Ibandronate Sodium (Generic Boniva tablets) is only part of a complete program of treatment that may also include diet changes, exercise, and taking calcium and vitamin supplements. Follow your diet, medication, and exercise routines very closely.

Ibandronate Sodium Dosage
The dosage of Ibandronate Sodium tablets (Idrofos) is one 150 mg tablet once monthly on the same day each month
The tablet has to be swallowed whole with 6 to 8 oz of plain water only, at least 60 minutes before the first food, beverage, or medication of day. Avoid lying down for at least 60 minutes after taking Generic Boniva (Idrofos tablet).
Do not eat, drink (except for water), or take other medication for at least 60 minutes after taking Ibandronate Sodium tablets. You must take supplemental calcium and vitamin D if dietary intake inadequate.
How to Use Generic Boniva (Idrofos Tablets by Sun Pharma)
Use Idrofos by Sun Pharma (Ibandronic acid tablets) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
Idrofos 150 mg tablet is taken once each month. Take Idrofos in the morning, at least 1 hour (60 minutes) before you eat or drink anything or take any other medicine. Take it on the same day each month and always first thing in the morning.
Take each tablet with a full glass (6 to 8 ounces) of water. Use only plain water (not mineral water) when taking Idrofos by Sun Pharma (Generic Boniva, Ibandronate). Do not crush, chew, or suck the tablet. Swallow the tablet whole.
After taking Idrofos tablet, carefully follow these instructions:
• do not lie down or recline for at least 60 minutes after taking the tablet
• do not eat or drink anything other than plain water
• do not take any other medicines including vitamins, calcium, or antacids for at least 60 minutes after taking this medicine
It may be best to take your other medicines at a different time of the day. Talk with your doctor about the best dosing schedule for your other medicines.

If you forget to take Generic Boniva on your scheduled day, take it first thing in the morning on the day after you remember the missed dose. Do not take two (2) tablets in one month.
Ibandronate Sodium Tablets (Idrofos) Contraindications
Ibandronate Sodium Tablets (Idrofos) are contraindicated in the following cases:
- Known hypersensitivity to Ibandronate Sodium Tabletsor to any of the inactive ingredients present in Idrofos tablets(Generic Boniva). Some cases of anaphylaxis, including fatal events, have been reported.
- Uncorrected hypocalcemia
- Inability to stand or sit upright for at least 60 minutes
Ibandronate Sodium Side Effects
The most common Ibandronate Sodium side effects ocurring in 5% or more of the patients undergoing treatment with this medicine are are back pain, dyspepsia, pain in extremity, diarrhea, headache, and myalgia.
Get emergency medical help if you have any signs of an allergic reaction including hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using Idrofos by Sun Pharma (Generic Boniva) and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious Idrofos side effects:
• chest pain
• difficulty or pain when swallowing
• pain or burning under the ribs or in the back
• new or worsening heartburn
• severe joint, bone, or muscle pain
• new or unusual pain in your thigh or hip
• jaw pain, numbness, or swelling
Less serious side effects of Ibandronate Sodium tablets may include:
• back pain, headache
• redness or swelling of your eyes
• diarrhea
• flu symptoms
• redness or swelling where the medicine was injected
• nausea or upset stomach
• pain in your arms or legs
Overdose symptoms may include nausea, heartburn, stomach pain, diarrhea, muscle cramps, numbness or tingling, tight muscles in your face, seizure (convulsions), irritability, and unusual thoughts or behavior.
Warnings & Precautions When Using Idrofos Tablets (Generic Boniva)
You should not use Idrofos tablets (Generic Boniva) if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, or if you have severe kidney disease, low blood levels of calcium (hypocalcemia), or a problem with your esophagus (the tube that connects your mouth and stomach).
Do not take this medicine if you cannot sit upright or stand for at least one full hour. Idrofos (Ibandronate acid tablets) can cause serious problems in the stomach or esophagus. You will need to stay upright for at least 60 minutes after taking this medication.
To make sure you can safely take Idrofos by Sun Pharma (Generic Boniva, Ibandronate), tell your doctor if you have any of these other conditions:
• a vitamin D deficiency
• kidney disease
• an ulcer in your stomach or esophagus
• trouble swallowing
Some people using medicines similar to Idrofos tablets (Generic Boniva) have developed bone loss in the jaw, also called osteonecrosis of the jaw. Symptoms of this condition may include jaw pain, swelling, numbness, loose teeth, gum infection, or slow healing after injury or surgery involving the gums.
You may be more likely to develop osteonecrosis of the jaw if you have cancer or have been treated with chemotherapy, radiation, or steroids. Other conditions associated with osteonecrosis of the jaw include blood clotting disorders, anemia (low red blood cells), and dental surgery or pre-existing dental problems.
Do not take any other medicines including vitamins, calcium, or antacids for at least 60 minutes before or after taking Idrofos (Ibandronate acid tablets).
Avoid milk and other dairy products for at least 60 minutes after taking this medicine (except in the case of overdose). Do not lie down for at least 1 hour (60 minutes) after you take a tablet.
Ibandronate Sodium During Pregnancy
Ibandronate Sodium has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category C. Since there are There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, Ibandronate Sodium tablets (Generic Boniva) should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the mother and fetus.
Presently there is no data on fetal risk in humans, but it is proved that bisphosphonates do cause fetal harm in animals, and animal data shows that uptake of bisphosphonates into fetal bone is greater than into maternal bone. Hence, there is a possible risk of fetal harm (e.g., skeletal and other abnormalities) if a woman becomes pregnant after completing a course of bisphosphonate therapy. It is not known whether Ibandronate Sodium (Generic Boniva tablets) is excreted in human milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Since many medicines are excreted in human milk, caution should be exercised when Ibandronate tablets are administered to a nursing woman.
During animal studies conducted in lactating rats treated with intravenous doses, Ibandronate was found in breast milk from 2 to 24 hours after dose administration. Ibandronate concentrations in milk averaged 1.5 times plasma concentrations.
