Etizolam Tablets (Etizex) is a hypnotic and sedative (anti-anxiety medicine), prescribed for the short-term treatment of insomnia, anxiety and panic attacks. Etizolam is a Thienodiazepine medicine which is a Benzodiazepine analog. Medical effect of oral doses of this medicine have an onset of 30 to 60 minutes and peak at 3 to 4 hours. The duration is generally 6 to 8 hours although higher doses could last much longer. Active Ingredient present in Etizex Tablets

The active ingredient present in Etizex tablets is Etizolam. Each Etizex tablet contains 0.5 mg or 1 mg of Etizolam.

Uses of Etizex Tablets

Etizex tablets is a highly effective anti-anxiety medicine (hypnotic and sedative) that is similar to benzodiazepine class of medicines. It is prescribed for the management of anxiety and short-term treatment of insomnia (sleep disorders).

Etizolam Vs Xanax

The main differences are :
Indications: Etizolam is used for the treatment of Generalized anxiety disorder. Panic disorder. Acute anxiety. Insomnia. Xanax is used for the treatment of Generalized anxiety disorder. Panic disorder.
Mechanism of Action:
Etizolam: GABAA receptor positive allosteric modulator (PAM).Dose-dependently inhibits acetylcholine release in hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. Exhibits lower intrinsic activity at A1 subunit-containing GABAA receptors than conventional benzodiazepines.
Xanax: GABAA receptor positive allosteric modulator (PAM). Suppresses activity within the HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis. Increases extracellular D1 and D2 dopamine concentrations in the striatum.
Half Life:
The half life is 7 to 15 hours for Etizolam and 9 to 16 hours (~12 hours) for Xanax.
Side Effects:
Common side effects are Sedation, Muscle weakness, Ataxia for Etizolam and Drowsiness. Lightheadedness. Dry mouth. Depression. Headache. Constipation. Diarrhea for Xanax.

Etizolam Tablets (Etizex) - Dosage

The adult dosage of Etizolam Tablets (Etizex tablets) for various indications is given below:

Anxiety disorder: The adult dosage for anxiety disorder is 0.25 mg to 0.5mg twice daily (2 mg maximum in any 24 hour period)
Panic disorder: The adult dosage for panic disorder is 0.5 mg twice daily
Insomnia: The adult dosage for sleep is 1 mg to 2 mg twice daily.

Etizex Tablets Storage

Store Etizex tablets at controlled room temperature (20°C to 25°C). Protect from light.

Etizex Contraindications

Etizex tablets are contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Etizolam or to any medicine in the Benzodiazepine class or any inactive ingredient present in tablets. Etizex tablets are also contraindicated in the following cases:

• Patients with acute narrow angle glaucoma.
• Patients with evere liver failure
• Pregnancy and lactation
• Myasthenia gravis (Etizolam could increase the muscle weakness)
• Severe respiratory failure or sleep apnea syndrome

Missed Dose

Take the missed dose of Etizolam (Etizex Tablets) as soon as you remember. The missed dose can be skipped in case it is almost the time for the next scheduled dose. Try not to miss any dose as the quantity and timings are very specific and non-adherence could cause some additional side effects.

Warnings and Precautions

• Patients must be advised not drive or operate machinery or do other dangerous activities after taking Etizolam until you feel fully awake.
• Avoid drinking alcohol when undergoing treatment with this medicine.
• Respiratory depression could occur in benzodiazepine overdose including Etizolam.
• Use of Benzodiazepines could lead to dependence. This risk increases with dose and duration of treatment and in patients with a history of alcohol or drug abuse.
• Withdrawal symptoms like convulsions, tremor, abdominal and muscle cramps, vomiting, sweating, appetite decrease, weight loss, anxiety and insomnia were seen during benzodiazepines discontinuation. Etizolam should be reduced or discontinued gradually
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of lung insufficiency, muscle weakness, impaired liver or kidney function, alcoholism or drug addiction, elderly, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• Use of this medication could cause suicidal thoughts and inclinations and hence it should be given with extreme caution in patients having mental problems like depression, phobias, chronic psychoses etc.

Etizolam Side Effects

The main Etizolam (Etizex Tablets) side effects include drowsiness, sedation, muscle weakness and incoordination, fainting, headache, confusion, depression, slurred speech, visual disturbances and changes in libido and tremor. Etizolam Overdosage

Overall, Etizolam is reported to be “well tolerated with little side effects” when prescribed and taken as per prescribed dose.

Any incidence of overdose must be reported to the doctor immediately as the symptoms can be fatal, especially if it is consumed by a child or a person using it without prescription. Symptoms of overdose may include a slower rate of breathing, decreased heartbeat rate, severe drowsiness and fainting.

Flumazenil, a GABA antagonist agent can be used to reverse the effect of Etizolam overdosage as well as classical Benzodiazepines such as Diazepam and Chlordiazepoxide.

Etizolam During Pregnancy

Etizolam has been classified as Pregnancy Category C. Either studies in animals have revealed adverse effects on the foetus (teratogenic or embryocidal or other) and there are no controlled studies in women or studies in women and animals are not available. This medicine should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus.

Do not use this medicine without your doctor's consent in case you are pregnant. Stop using Etizex tablets and inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant during treatment.

Nursing Considerations

Benzodiazepines are known to be excreted in human milk. It should be assumed that Etizolam is as well.

Chronic administration of diazepam to nursing mothers has been reported to cause their infants to become lethargic and to lose weight. As a general rule, nursing should not be undertaken by mothers who must use Etizolam tablets. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
