The active ingredient present in Tenvir tablets is Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate . Each film-coated Tenvir tablet contains 300 mg of Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate equivalent to Tenofovir Disoproxil 245 mg.

What Is Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate Used For?

Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate tablets are used with other antiviral medicines to treat Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in adults and pediatric patients 12 years of age and older. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome).

Generic Tenofovir (Tenvir by Cipla) may lower the amount of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in your body and the ability of HBV to multiply and infect new liver cells. It may improve the condition of your liver. It will not cure HBV.

Tenvir Tablets (Generic Tenofovir) - Dosage

The dosage of Tenvir Tablets (Generic Tenofovir) for various indications is given below:

Recommended dose for the treatment of HIV-1 or chronic hepatitis B in adults and pediatric patients 12 years of age and older (35 kg or more):
The dosage is 300 mg once daily taken orally with or without food.

Recommended dose for the treatment of HIV-1 in pediatric patients(2 to less than 12 years of age):
The dosage for pediatric patients weighing greater than or equal to 17 kg who can swallow an intact tablet, one Tenvir Tablet (150, 200, 250 or 300 mg based on body weight) once daily taken orally with or without food.

How to Use Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate Tablets

Take Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate tablets exactly as your healthcare provider tells you to. Take it at the same time every day by mouth, with or without food. The usual dose of this medicine is 1 tablet each day.

Do not miss a dose of this medicine. If you miss a dose of Tenvir Tablets (Generic Tenofovir), take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose of this medicine, do not take the missed dose. Take the next dose of this medicine at your regular time.

If you are an adult and have kidney problems, your healthcare provider may tell you to take this medicine less often. If you take too much this medicine, call your local poison control center or go right away to the nearest hospital emergency room.

Tenvir Contraindications

Tenvir tablets are contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate or any inactive ingredient present in Tenvir tablets.

Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate Side effects

The most common Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate side effects with an incidence greater than or equal to 10% are rash, diarrhea, headache, pain, depression, asthenia, and nausea.

Lactic acidosis (build-up of an acid in your blood) can happen in some people who take this medicine or similar medicines (nucleoside analog).  Lactic acidosis is a serious medical emergency that can lead to death. It can be hard to identify early, because the symptoms could seem like symptoms of other health problems. Severe liver problems can happen in people who take this medicine or similar medicines. In some cases these liver problems can lead to death. Your liver may become large (hepatomegaly) and you may develop fat in your liver (steatosis) when you take this medicine. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms of liver problems:
• your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow (jaundice)
• dark "tea-colored" urine
• light-colored bowl movements (stools)
• loss of appetite for several days or longer
• nausea
• stomach pain

You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or severe liver problems if you are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking this medicine or a similar medicine for a long time. Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection may become worse (flare-up) if you take this medicine and then stop it. A "flare-up" is when your HBV infection suddenly returns in a worse way than before.

Do not let your medicine supply run out. Get a refill or talk to your healthcare provider before the medicine is all gone. Do not stop taking this medicine without first talking to your healthcare provider. If you stop taking this medicine, your healthcare provider will need to check your health often and do regular blood tests to check your HBV infection.

Tell your healthcare provider about any new or unusual symptoms you may have after you stop taking this medicine. Talk to your doctor about taking an HIV test before starting treatment with this medicine for chronic hepatitis B. You should also get a test for HBV if you are taking this medicine for treatment of HIV.

New or worse kidney problems can happen in some people who take this medicine. If you have had kidney problems in the past or need to take another medicine that can cause kidney problems, your healthcare provider may need to do blood tests to check your kidneys during your treatment with this medicine.

Bone problems can happen in some people who take this medicine. Bone problems include bone pain, softening or thinning (which may lead to fractures).Your healthcare provider may need to do additional tests to check your bones.

Changes in body fat can happen in some people who take antiviral medicines. These changes may include increased amount of fat in the upper back and neck ("buffalo hump"), breast, and around the main part of your body (trunk). Loss of fat from the legs, arms, and face may also happen. The cause and long-term health effects of these conditions are not known.

Changes in your immune system (Immune Reconstitution Syndrome) can happen when you start taking HIV medicines. Your immune system may get stronger and begin to fight infections that have been hidden in your body for a long time. Tell your doctor if you start having new symptoms after starting your HIV medicine.

Tell your healthcare provider if you have any Tenvir side effect that bothers you or that does not go away. These are not all the possible side effects of this medicine. For more information, ask your healthcare provider.

Storage Instructions

Store Tenvir tablets (Generic Tenofovir) at 25°C (77 °F), excursions permitted to 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F). Keep the bottle tightly closed. Keep away from children and pets.

• adefovir (Hepsera®)

Especially tell your healthcare provider if you take the following medications, as the dose of these other medications may need to be changed:
• didanosine (Videx®, Videx EC®)
• atazanavir (Reyataz®)
• lopinavir with ritonavir (Kaletra®)

Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of them to show your healthcare provider when you get a new medicine.

Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy category B . There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
